In subsaharian Africa to have a diagnosis is impossible for the majority of the population. Pathologists are a very few number.
In Zambia there is 1 pathologist for about 10.000.000 people, in Madagascar 8 for 22.0000.000, in RD Congo about 10 for 74.000.000. in Italy we are about 2500 pathologists for 60.000.000 people

What does it mean for aficans?

A comparison of pathology services between many African countries and the U.S.A/European countries is indeed a magnitude of multiples. Pathology as a discipline is integral to the practice of medicine and I can't fathom how the course of treatment be set without finding out what is wrong in the first place. However, with the technology and communication channels available today mass communication and awareness to the worldwide pathology community can be made. Let us know what pathpedia.com can do?

How did you get that statistics? If correct, then essentially there are no pathology services in those regions. It is a matter of resources. Non-profit organizations such as International Academy of Pathology (IAP) should step up to take a lead in improving pathology services in such areas.

The data I reported are the result of direct knowledge of the situation in the four countries appointed. In fact, the sub-Saharan Africa, except exceptions, it is almost in these conditions. The surgical pathology labs exists but generally one for country and with few pathologists working in laboratories below acceptable standards.

It is not only a problem of resources, it is also a problem of lack of professionals preparations. Only a few do reach to levels of high competence and when they get there often remain abroad where they studied orin the capital. The result is that for the majority of the population is absolutely impossible to have a diagnosis.

Only a few years the world noticed that the Africans die of cancer, which is not a privilege of Western nations

Our NGO, Patologi Oltre Frontiera (www.patologioltrefrontiera.it ), works in this direction but is almost alone

International Academy of Pathology (IAP), Italian Division may be of help in this regard. Their website can be found at http://www.siapec.it/index.php?Mod=Pagina&Pagina=213&ENG=1

I would encourage you to make more postings like this one to make the pathology community aware of the dismal pathology services' situation in those regions.
